Dublin, Ireland – Sept 29th - October 4th, 1999 – Rugby World Cup – USA vs Ireland

This is something we had thought about for awhile but only came to fruition a few weeks before hand. One thing I did learn was never book any accommodations online in Europe, as apparently booking a shared room for 3 of us meant sharing with 33 other individuals. Perhaps it was the lack of planning and the low expectations that made this such a great trip. The inauspicious beginning when John Malone and I found that the accommodations were less than steller was exacerbated by the fact that we could only check in at 2pm for some reason, leaving us to doze in the hallway. Jimmy actually showed up early, so the 3 of us trooped out to find accommodations, then as I took a large nap those two decided to find a local. After they took their evening siesta we went out for a good session, highlighted by the rickshaw ride, Jimmy and Malone almost coming to blows and Jimmy’s unwitting purchase of a 38 pound bottle of champagne.

The next day saw us having to leave after 4 hours sleep because of the idiotic policy of having to check out at 10am.We dropped our stuff off at the new lodgings then went to find something to eat, which led us to ‘The Quays’ to once again spend the afternoon with Roger the bartender and Robbie the bouncer. Jimmy couldn’t handle much more tomfoolery and retired to his chambers by 9:30pm which left Malone and I to go to Temple Bar. Suffice to say a good time was had by all.

Saturday was game day, and after visiting the Guinness Brewery we duly went to Landsdowne road to see the USA spanked by Ireland 52-17. Although we were interviewed by Sports Illustrated / New York Times Jimmy was the only one who was actually quoted in the paper the following day. Another evening of drinking occurred, followed by a Sunday spent watching games for 6 hours at a sports bar – at least we got to see Chelsea thrash Man Utd 4-0.
