I love popular culture. Quoting lines from favourite songs, tv or film is part of everyday communication, or at least it should be. The following is going to be lists of my favourite stuff, in no particular order.
Top 10 Books
1. The
Stand - Stephen King
2. Starship
Troopers - Robert Heinlein
3. The Sum of
All Fears - Tom Clancy
4. The
Partner - John Grisham
5. A Fighting Man
of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs
6. Contact
- Carl Sagan
7. The Sign
of Four - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
8. 20
Years After - Alexandre Dumas
9. The
Long Walk / The Running Man - Richard Bachman alias Stephen King
10.The
Sound & The Fury - William Faulkner
Honorable Mentions - Books by Rider Haggard (Adventures like 'Allain
Quartermain' and 'She'), Susan Cooper ('Dark is Rising' series), J.R.R.
Tolkein ('Lord of the Rings'), Isaac Asimov ('Foundation' series and 'Robot'
series)
Top 10 Movies
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Midnight Run
4. The Untouchables
5. Seven
6. The Sound of Music (Just because I like this movie doesn't mean
I also like Babra Streisand, if you know what I mean...)
7. Raising Arizona
8. The Great Escape
9. Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan
10. The Matrix
Also, a rather intriguing webpage was recently
featured in the NYTimes talking about a Hollywood
Stock Exchange using stars/movies as stocks/bonds - looks pretty interesting.
Top 10 TV Shows (American, because
noone would know my favourite English shows like 'Grange Hill' and 'Spitting
Image')
1. X Files
2. The Simpsons
3. Seinfeld
4. Sportscenter
5. OZ - Boy, I'm never going to go jail - rather
kill myself
6. NYPD Blue - The ones with Caruso
7. Frasier
8. Sex in the City
9. Friends
Does it say anything about modern TV that I can
only list 9 shows, and half of them are old ones? Does it say anything
about modern society that I still manage to squeeze in a solid 8 hours
of TV watching a day when I can't even think of 10 good shows off hand?
Music? Don't have particular favourite bands
- just songs which I like - songs are a lot more ephemeral because you
can listen to one so many times that you get sick of it, as opposed to
watching a 2 hour movie 50 times. One good article on MP3 is the
PC magazine one - MP3
Music on your PC
