Coming from England, my favourite sports were REAL football (soccer
for the ignorant) and cricket.
At college I started playing a lot of Rugby, plus also got into american
sports like basketball, American football and baseball. As we go on, I'll
be adding links for my favourite teams, starting with the one, the only,
L.F.C.
Football (Soccer)
Having lived in Manhattan for a couple of years now I thought I would
never find a local team to play with (well, a team that spoke English and
were willing to pass it to me), but lo and behold a chance encounter at
a party led me to Central Park
Rangers.As you can probably
tell, it was founded by a couple of British expats who shared a fondness
for Queens Park Rangers, a rather mediocre football team from London that
wasn’t too bad in the 80’s but has since fallen upon hard times. It
just so happened that our timing was perfect, as Jimmy and I were playing
with the Hudson River Hawks out in Rockland, having to schlep out every
Sunday morning at 9am to get there. The
relief of being able to actually walk to the games as opposed to drive
out to them was tangible, as was the fact that these guys are about as
sociable a group as you could want.
The Club is made up of 4 teams, the first 3 of which play in the Cosmopolitan League, whereas the 4th team plays in the Metropolitan League. The major benefits of playing in the Metro League is the fact that the field is fixed at City College at 133rd and Convent Avenue in Harlem as opposed to having to drive all over Long Island and New Jersey to get to away games in the Cosmo League. This year we did pretty well, finishing 5th out of 12 with it being the first season for most of us.The spring season looks to have a marked improvement and a shot at the title.Until then we’ll have to content ourselves with strategy sessions at our headquarters, otherwise known as our sponsor the Parlour on 86th and Broadway.
LIVERPOOL FC
- The one, the only - The team of the 80's will soon be the team of the
next century, especially with the prodigy Micheal Owen on board.
Liverpool NY Supporters
club - These guys get together every week to watch the games live -
I expect to be there soon on a consistent basis.
ISFA - This is a great site to get
onto all kinds of newsgroups/message boards regarding soccer
Wycombe
Wanderers - Interesting, the whole time I lived in the town of High
Wycombe the team was useless, but as soon as I left all of a sudden they
became good and are now in Division 2. Here's an 'unofficial' page that's
a lot of fun.
USA Team football - an informative
page on what's new with the US National team
My other favourite sport for playing & watching when growing up
was cricket
Here's a good site on Indian Cricket
American Football
NFL's main page, which contains links
to those New York powerhouses, the Jets & the Giants
Basketball
NBA's main page, which contains links
to my favourite teams, not coincidentally the Knicks & Nets. BTW, this
is a very impressive page, probably the best sports one I've seen - every
detail meticulously planned. David Stern is no joke!
Baseball
MLB's main page, which
contains links to the Yankees/Mets.
Now, before all you whining NY area fans start blasting me for liking
BOTH the Yankees/Mets, Jets/Giants, Knicks/Nets, the reason is because
I moved here 12 years ago so didn't have time to develop a love/hate relationship.
Can't we all just love one another?
